GURU MANDIR – MYSORE, KARNATAKA: The name signifies “Abode of the Master”. It is located in the diocese of Mysore, which covers an area of 21,051 sq kms. With a Catholic population of 94,500. The languages spoken and understood in the region are Kannada, Tamil, Konkani, and Urdu.

Guru Mandir is located within the city limits of Mysore and it is 4-5kms from the centre. The city is also known as the City of Palaces. The property was purchased from the Sisters of Notre Dame. This house which was originally owned by the Royals was purchased from the Sisters of Notre-Dame who moved to another house within the city. Guru Mandir was established in the year 1982, as the Minor Seminary, where our aspirants made their first entry into the Montfortian family. The frontal view of the house faces the well-known Chamundi Hill, and not too far from the residence across the road is situated the famous LalithaMahal Palace. Hardly a kilometre towards the right one finds the Mysore Race Course and the Mysore zoo.

It is here, that candidates who have completed their period of Aspirancy, are welcomed for their Postulancy. They are aged 16-17 and hence are sent to a nearby educational institution run by the Mysore diocese for their Pre-University College education, which lasts for two years. The process of this stage is “to start afresh from Christ the Lord and Master” – from the abode of the Master – Guru Mandir. The process focuses on enabling the postulant to perceive Christ as his model and to be lead to remain faithful to his discerned vocation. As such, the specific goal of this stage is to help the young postulant to live together in the community; clarify and appreciate his vocation; be faithful to his academic education; develop his individual talents for the benefit of the community; face separation from the family by opening himself to new relationships in the community and at college; be initiated with the missionary character of the congregation through social insertion and Ashram experience; and accept and appreciate his body as God’s gift and grow into a healthy person.
