Theme: Bearers and Sharers of Joy
Today’s Gospel reading from the Gospel of St. Luke teaches us, there’s no deeper experience than having someone that you feel understands you; someone with whom you can share your past to discover how God continually touches your life. The meeting of Mary with Elizabeth is one such example that reveals to us the importance of having someone and becoming someone with whom one can feel that oneness to reveal oneself and find God’s hand working in our lives. To seek this person, we must first stand up, get out of our comfort zone. Mary set out on a journey conquering the distant mountains. Mary journeys alone on a treacherous road, crossing Samaria to reach Judea. Mary isn’t looking for just anyone with whom to share her joy: she’s looking for Elizabeth, she who can truly understand her; a woman that is living an experience similar to her own.
Elizabeth represents the barrenness of humanity, humanity without hope. It is precisely to this humanity, which is without hope, that Mary brings Christ. Elizabeth, whose name means God is Promise, is the figure of every man and woman for whom God has a promise to fulfill. Elizabeth is the first-person Mary goes to see. Their dialogue becomes a place of confirmation that reveals God is truly among us. Today we live in the tech-world where often we fail to listen to others especially those who are in need. We bury ourselves in our comfort zones of the technological world and are blinded by the individualistic mentality. It’s a reminder for us that we need to listen to the person who needs to talk as well we need to speak to the person who is ready to listen to us.
Mary’s journey belongs to all of us; sometimes like Mary, we too are on a journey to find someone who can understand us and someone who can show the working hand of God in our lives. This passage of the Gospel of St. Luke challenges us today to become persons like Mary and Elizabeth who dare to believe, who truly understands the work of God, and becomes the source of joy and consolation to each other. Am I ready to become such bearer and sharer of that Joy?
