I. Gen 3: 1- 8
II. Mk 7: 31- 37
Theme: Jesus brings new life in the hearts of the people.
The first reading tells us how our first parents lost friendship with God, the fatal event that spelled tragedy for the human race. The author shows that a serpent was responsible for the down fall of man and so that the Jews would not find attractive the serpent worship of their pagan neighbors. The teaching of the church about original sin derives from this story of man’s fall from grace. We know for certain that man disobeyed God’s command. In the gospel reading we hear that all the miracle of Jesus points to one thing, namely the transformation that place in the person when Jesus comes into one’s life. Here a dumb and deaf man is brought to Jesus requesting him to lay His hands upon him. When Jesus laid hands upon this man, His healing power passed on to man and healed him from his diseases. Both touch and command symbolize Jesus entry of Himself directly in the life of this man. The result is that the person is no more the same one, but changed, a transformed, and received a new life.
In this case the hearing and the power of speech were restored, thus the mind and heart to the voice of God, paving the way for the better and effective proclamation of the wonderful works of God to the world. In most of such healing Jesus forbids the beneficiary from mentioned it, the more he charged them the more Zealously they proclaimed. This proclamation of the wonderful deeds is an irresistible urge as a result of their transformation, as a result of their personal experience of God in their lives.
